Frasier’s Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs

Frasier

Is there a show that is old, but that you still love to watch — even if it as old as the hills? For me, that show has to be Frasier.

When this show ran in the 1990s I can’t say I was exactly watching it regularly, but when my husband and I were moving from Australia to Seattle, WA, I remember the show would come on on one of the channels in Oz and we would dream about what our future Seattle days would look like. Would they be full of tossed salad and scrambled eggs?

Fast forward to today, and I still love Frasier and I can watch it each night these days as well. From this vantage point, I now live in Seattle and know how I have filled my days here. It makes the antics of Seattle even more endearing to me as it is no longer only a daydream for me.

Recently, I got interested in the theme song, Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs and finally Vulture tracked the composer of the lyrics down and said it had to do with the patients that Dr. Crane serves are “mixed up” like tossed salad and scrambled eggs. I will give it to you, it is all a bit obscure, but I guess I always thought it was a mixed up song and so thus the charm — of course, the jazz tune makes it fun.

It’s interesting that the song refers to Dr. Crane’s patients being mixed up, but I think the whole world feels mixed up these days. From people to events to society, it all is fairly messy and not congruent and sensible. What is right is wrong and wrong is right. What we think will never happen is happening. We are walking around with masks, keeping distance, zooming, and more. It all feels odd at times.

When the mess becomes messy and the mix up feels beyond the pale, turn on this little tune and remind yourself it’s not patients who are mixed up, but the whole thing. And we are all trying our best as we reach for the tossed salad and scrambled eggs.
